Why I Love Sewing
When I was little, I was always really creative and loved building things — plus I was obsessed with dolls. One day I was with my Nana while she was sewing a patch, and I remember being completely fascinated by what she was doing. I asked her to show me how it worked, and once I got the hang of it, I realized I could start making clothes for my dolls. That’s honestly where everything began. Being able to bring my ideas to life with fabric felt really inspiring, and as I grew older, I realized I could start making my own clothes too. Ever since then, sewing has just been a part of who I am. I love coming up with my own patterns and designs, and I also really enjoy doing patchwork — but not in the traditional quilt way. I like creating little patchwork “scenes” or designs, almost like mini pieces of art. That’s something I’ve been experimenting with more recently, and it’s been really fun.I wanted to share all of this because sewing has been such a creative outlet for me, and it feels good to make something that’s truly your own.
My Essential Tools
My essential tools start with a rotary cutter or powered scissors — they make cutting fabric way easier and way less time-consuming. I also think having a French curve ruler is really important, especially for cutting curved edges. Fabric chalk is another must-have because it lets you mark your lines without damaging the fabric, and the chalk disappears after washing. It keeps everything clean and organized while you work. I also really recommend having a few different types of sewing machine feet. Different fabrics behave differently, and the right presser foot can honestly save you from wanting to quit out of frustration. An Iron and Ironing Board are important too — they keep your edges crisp and make the whole sewing process smoother. And of course, get yourself a good variety of sewing machine needles. Different fabrics need different needle types, and it’s the same idea as having different presser feet: using the right one makes everything so much easier.
